FCI's President- Emeritus, Jill Sheffield, wins Carl Schultz Award
On October 27, FCI’s founder and President Emeritus, Jill Sheffield, was honored with the Carl S. Schultz Award for Lifetime Achievement. Given by the Population, Family Planning and Reproductive Health Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA), this prestigious award recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding lifetime contribution to the field of population and reproductive health. The award was presented by Jason Smith, Director of Research Utilization of Family Health International, who cited Jill’s commitment, her resourcefulness, her remarkable intelligence, and her steely determination to make a difference in the lives of women everywhere. “She has made her indelible mark not only on FCI, but on the entire field of women’s health”, he said.
Special event at UN highlights commitments to mothers and children
On September 25, representatives of more than 100 governments and international organizations gathered in New York at the special event “Commitment to Progress for Mothers, Newborn and Children.” Organized by FCI and colleague organizations and hosted by the Presidents of Chile, Finland and Tanzania, the event highlighted the need for urgent global action and substantial increased investment in maternal and child health. FCI calls for greater investment in maternal health in Africa

New York- Recognizing that African countries are not likely to achieve the MDGs without significant investment in sexual and reproductive health, UNFPA, UNICEF and other colleague agencies invited FCI’s President Emeritus Jill Sheffield to speak at the panel session “The Social Development Challenge in Africa- Better Health for Africa”, held at the UN. Young people in 4 Caribbean countries have new health education tools

FCI and UNFPA-Jamaica have co-published You, Your Life, Your Dreams- A Book for Caribbean Adolescents in four Caribbean nations. Easy to read and visually attractive, it provides accessible, objective, and urgently-needed information on a broad range of sexual and reproductive health issues, empowering young people to make informed decisions about their sexual lives. Originally conceived for use in English-speaking Africa, You, Your Life, Your Dreams, was extensively adapted to reflect both the unique challenges facing young people in Caribbean nations and the sub-region’s rich multi-ethnic culture. The MDGs: Perspectives from Latin America and Caribbean Youth
FCI and the Youth Coalition for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (YCSRR) have issued a new publication in Spanish: “The Millennium Development Goals and Sexual and Reproductive Health: The perspective of Latin America and Caribbean Youth”. It provides guidance on how investing in young people’s sexual and reproductive health and rights can help countries reach the MDG goals. Click here for more information.
