Our History

Family Care International (FCI) was established in 1987. Our founding vision was a strong commitment to improving maternal health – and that commitment remains central to the organization’s mission. FCI has for more than two decades been a leading voice — globally, in the US and Europe, and in developing countries — on behalf of the half-million women who die needlessly each year in pregnancy and childbirth. Working through our field offices, FCI now invests over two-thirds of our budget to strengthen reproductive health programs in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. FCI creates tools and resources to strengthen services in more than 100 countries.

How We Work

FCI advances its work by:
  • Strengthening national and international commitment and resources for people-centered policies and programs, and encouraging action through the exchange of information and experience.
  • Building the capacity of partners in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean to design, implement, and evaluate national strategies and model programs.
Integral to both these strategies is the production of quality and comprehensive advocacy and education materials that reinforce programmatic efforts.

Our Partners

FCI works with governments, non-governmental organizations, professional groups, and international agencies to make pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world. We build partnerships at all levels to share ideas and experiences, respond to local needs, maximize effective use of resources, minimize duplication, and encourage replication of successful models and approaches.

Our Mission

FCI is dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safer around the world.

We work to:

  • Ensure access to quality maternal and newborn health care;
  • Help women and girls to prevent and manage unintended pregnancy;
  • Promote the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people and other underserved groups;
  • Reduce the spread of HIV, especially among women and young people.

FCI envisions a world where no woman suffers preventable injury or death from pregnancy or childbirth related causes, and in which all people are able to enjoy their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

These values guide FCI’s work both within our organization and within the global and local communities in which we work:

  • Partnership: We are dedicated to working collaboratively and to promoting teamwork, solidarity, and recognition of collective achievements.
  • Integrity: We foster open communication, honesty, accountability, transparency, and critical learning in our work.
  • Respect: We are committed to treating all people with respect and ensuring that the voices of the marginalized are heard.
  • Excellence: We strive for high quality in all our work and for effective use of our resources.
